Central heating systems age from the inside. Water plus steel plus time equals magnetite — the fine black sludge that settles in radiators, clogs valves and coats the inside of your boiler. Here are the seven signs we look for, roughly in the order they usually appear.
1. Radiators cold at the bottom
The classic. Sludge sinks, so it blankets the bottom of the radiator while hot water flows across the top. If the middle-bottom of a radiator stays cool while the top edge burns your hand, that's sediment, not air — bleeding won't fix it.
2. Black or dirty water when bleeding
Crack a bleed valve onto a white cloth. Healthy system water runs slightly grey; heavily contaminated water comes out black as espresso. What's on the cloth is what's lining your boiler's heat exchanger.
3. Radiators that need constant bleeding
Air once a year is normal. Air every month means corrosion is actively generating gas inside the system — a sign the water chemistry has gone and the inhibitor is long spent.
4. Some rooms heat, others don't
Sludge doesn't distribute itself fairly. It collects in the radiators with the laziest flow — usually the furthest from the boiler — so the landing roasts while the back bedroom never warms.
5. A noisy, kettling boiler
Scale and sludge on the heat exchanger make water boil in tiny pockets, producing a rumbling or whistling like a kettle. It forces the boiler to work harder and shortens its life.
6. Slow warm-up
If the house takes noticeably longer to reach temperature than it used to, the system is fighting restricted flow — and your gas bill is quietly absorbing the difference.
7. Repeated pump and valve failures
Pumps and motorised valves that keep failing are often victims, not culprits: abrasive sludge wears them out. Replacing parts without cleaning the water just books the next failure.
What a power flush does
A power flush circulates cleaning chemicals through the system at high velocity, radiator by radiator, until the water runs clear — then the system is refilled with fresh inhibitor and, ideally, protected with a magnetic filter. Expect radiators hot across their full face, faster warm-up and a quieter boiler. Two or more of the signs above sound familiar?
